A new study by LegalBison, a law firm specializing in crypto licenses, has declared the Netherlands as the most crypto-obsessed country in the world. With 5,593 monthly searches per 100,000 inhabitants for terms such as “Bitcoin,” “Dogecoin,” and “Cryptocurrency,” the Netherlands leaves the competition far behind. What drives this fascination, and how does this fit into the broader European trend?
Liechtenstein follows with 4,470 searches per 100,000 – impressive for a country of only 40,000 people – and Switzerland ranks third with 4,260. Austria (4,078) and Finland (3,929) complete the top five, all European countries. Aaron Glauberman of LegalBison notes:
“With the top five in Europe, the enthusiasm for crypto on the continent is clear.”
Switzerland’s “Crypto Valley” in Zug – home to Ethereum, Tezos, and Polkadot – illustrates the popularity with flexible laws that fuel blockchain innovation.
The Netherlands’ lead may partly come from its tech-savvy population (17.5M) and an open economy, although it does not have a “Crypto Valley”. X-users speculate about tulip mania parallels, but concrete adoption (e.g., Bitonic, an early BTC-exchange) and a young, digital demographic play a role.
“Bitcoin” dominates globally, but altcoin interest varies. Dogecoin scores high in the Netherlands, while Switzerland searches more for “Ethereum” and “Polkadot”, fitting with local projects. Singapore (3,610, seventh) is the only non-European outlier, driven by its fintech hub status. Glauberman concludes with:
“While it will not surprise many that ‘Bitcoin’ is the most searched term related to crypto worldwide, it is the variation in cryptocurrency that follows this in certain countries that is interesting, as it shows how the crypto market can completely change from one country to another.”
Interestingly, the United States, despite Trump’s reserve (200K BTC, $17.9B at $89.652), misses the top ten – possibly due to a broader focus than pure search hype. This means that Trump still has a lot of work to do to make it the crypto-capital of the world.
