Elon Musk’s microblogging platform X has launched a new image generation tool called Aurora, which has sparked a lot of excitement among the platform’s users.
Aurora shares some features with X’s first AI image generator, which was introduced in October. It is accessible via the Grok tab on both mobile and web versions of the X website. Employees of Musk’s AI company xAI have announced Aurora and demonstrated its capabilities here. We also created the thumbnail for this article with Aurora.
Aurora can seamlessly generate images of both public and copyrighted figures, but generating nude images is excluded. It was able to create an image with a graphic representation of Trump, just like the previous generator.
Little is known about the origin of Aurora; it is unclear whether it was trained by the xAI team, an update of an existing tool, or a collaboration. Nevertheless, it produces photorealistic images, including landscapes and still lifes, although like many AI generators, it struggles to create realistic hands and sometimes blends objects and people unnaturally.
The launch of Aurora follows the announcement that Grok is now free for all users. Previously, access to Grok was tied to a subscription of $8 per month, accessible only to verified users. Free users can now send 10 messages to the AI and request three images per day. xAI recently also closed a funding round of $6 billion, with plans to develop a standalone app for Grok and work on the next generation, Grok 3.
Reactions to Aurora are mixed. Some users, such as @EnsoMatt, have used the tool to create impressive images of famous personalities, while others, such as @iruletheworldmo, consider it useless because it does not always follow the exact commands.
However, there are also concerns about the potential for misuse of AI image generation tools, especially in sectors such as the crypto market. Past examples show that these tools can be used to create controversial or unpleasant content, such as in the case of Taylor Swift. Although Aurora is not directly associated with such abuse, there remains a risk that it could be used by irresponsible actors.
